Board 1 George Turner My opponent played near perfect chess for about the first 25 moves (checked with the engine afterwards.) He made some inaccuracies after that but I never had any kind of advantage, so winning was impossible for me.I prefer that to simply blundering.
Board 2 Bill O'Rourke. Won his game. After being a piece down!
Board 3 Dave Almond. Lost his game.
Board 4 Steve Flaherty. Lost his game.
Board 5 Pete Hurn. I played my opening almost in auto pilot and made a huge error at move 6 gifting a piece to my young opponant after that it was all downhill and I finally resigned at move 42 being a whole rook down.
Board 6 Con Carey. Drew his game.

Board 1 Bill O'Rourke I Played Jeff Mason on board one last night in a very interesting game in which advantage ebbed and flowed either way. Got a slight advantage late in the opening, but broke open the position without seeing a sting in the tail 5 moves down the line which put Jeff better. However really pleased that I dug in and, with good endgame technique, managed to a force a draw with only 2 minutes left to secure a narrow win for the team.
Need to check the clocks- his said he still had loads of time left long after everybody else finished. Wonder if time increment set incorrectly, forgot to check at end.
Board 2 Dave Almond Lost his game.
Board 3 Steve Flaherty I played John Kelly of Stockport 2 on Wednesday evening with me playing the Black pieces. After his e4 opening I decided to play the Sicilian Defence fianchettoing my Kings Bishop onto g7. He played the opening better than me and what is that variation called when White plays f4 ? I have seen it before- no doubt Dave Almond will know. I replied with e6 which immediately weakened my d pawn and gave my opponent every encouragement to go after it. You would have thought that White was quite sensible in doubling up his rooks on the d file but in fact it cramped up his rooks which meant that when his rook was attacked by my knight it could either retreat and then both rooks get forked by the knight or it would have to go to d4 which of course was part of my bishop's long diagonal. The next move allowed me to move the knight to attack his queen and bishop whilst discovering the attack on the rook by my g2 bishop. This allowed me to become the exchange up and clearly unsettled my opponent who soon lost a pawn. Ten moves later it was all over as my opponent missed another fork with the knight. 1-0 to Steve. I dont always use my knights that well. particularly satisfying is to get a win when if I had drawn the team would have drawn the match and if I had lost the team would have lost the match.
Board 4 Con Carey Drew his game.
Board 5 Tony Jinks Drew his game
Board 6 Paul Curran Won his match.

Board 1 Dave Almond Playing white, and my usual b3, managed to win a pawn in a sneaky tactic. But I was subjected to a terrific king side pawn storm. Seeing all his threats, mate or the loss of a Rook to save my neck. Attacked on the opposite wing, ignored his threats keeping one move ahead, managed to checkmate him Ist
Board 2 Con Carey The game was very disappointing. Gordon Glover set the match up to win a point! The player that I played was very weak (0880) and the player Dave played (0935) his 2 other players (1450). So not much to say. Checkmate in 20 moves!
Board 3 Pete Hurn I was white and I played KP going into an Italian type set up, my opponent played some weird moves and soon I was a rook up. Coasting through the game instead of swapping off the pieces, I ignored a sneaky attack on my King and rooks and almost lost the game, thankfully he grabbed my rook for his knight so then I decided to concentrate on the game and he managed to get his rook stuck and then resigned.
Board 4 Paul Curran My young opponent played as white and directly into the London system; which I hate playing against. Attempting to get out of the London I ended up trading both black and white squared bishops off the board but this just led to a drawish looking position with diminishing attacking opportunities. Possibly knocked off concentration by a clock reset after time control I was gifted a blunder by my opponent allowing a Queen and King Knight fork after which I managed to find a mate.

Board 1 Bill O'Rourke Played Reg Clucas on board one, usually an Altrincham player but awaiting that club finding a venue and restarting. Reg is a strong player who gives nothing away. Managed to have him on the back foot for most of the game, but game was very complex. Felt I needed to push for win as we were already 2 down, but slightly over-extended and he found 2 game savers that eventually boiled down to him being a pawn ahead in a still complicated position. Like to think I played well enough that It was Reg asking for the draw in the end, which was agreed.
Board 2 Thisumi Jayawarna Drew her game.
Board 3 Steve Flaherty My game was drawn after my opponent was able to get a perpetual check after being a rook down. Most people would have resigned but he showed that sometimes even in the worst situations it’s best to not resign and make your opponent go all the way to a checkmate!
Board 4 Ian Mitchell Lost his game.
Board 5 Con Carey Lost his game.
Board 6 Tony Jinks I was black. It was a four knights game. Fairly interesting play but nothing too exciting. After about 30 moves I was offered a draw. As I had no idea who - if anyone - had the better position, and I was feeling lazy I accepted.

Unfortunately for my opponent, after a relatively sound first few moves, he blundered a piece for a pawn and several moves later blundered a full piece leaving me free to tidy up and accept his resignation.
Board 4 Matthew Poon Won his game.

Board 1 Ian Mitchell I was under the cosh from around move 10. Even though I was 2 pawns up, my kingside was under ferocious pressure for most of the game. No complaints my opponent fully deserved the win.
Board 2 Con Carey My game. I had white and l play the London System, but not very well. Lose a pawn? Then had to just equal the position. I offer the draw and we both agree the position was level and who ever when for the win, would perhaps lose and that was that game over!🙂
Board 3 Peter Hurn My game was a close affair he played a Queens gambit and I was undecided whether to play the Budapest or the Dutch and ended up with neither. I lost a central pawn and couldn’t recover my opponents was ungraded and not ECF registered and also didn’t record any moves, but was a good player. I resigned as he was about to Queen his passed pawn ♟ 😩
Board 4 Tony Jinks My opponent failed to castle and I made use of pins on the d and e files to open the centre. Then I played a combination that won a pawn and exposed his king. ( My phone has since pointed out that this was completely unsound and should have lost, but who cares?) Shortly afterwards I got the opportunity to play a nice deflection sacrifice that left him unable to prevent checkmate.
Board 5 Xavery Smyk My game was very interesting. We played a queen pawn game which Ive never played before . I lost a pawn which I managed to get back but I lost another and couldn't equalize. I resigned once he forked my bishop and rook. I could've played Better but he was a strong player!

Board 1 Bill O'Rourke I Had many tussles with Julian over the years. Played an irregular queens pawn game against Julian which provided a small nagging advantage right into middle end game. Eventually gained a pawn in rooks and knight each late middle game, but at the cost of losing momentum. Had to tough things out for 10 moves but then slowly regained positional advantage. Sadly Julian now blundered yielding the full point for us earlier then expected.
Board 2 Dave Almond My game, another difficult game with a Serbian, the guy played my pet opening, with a subtle Nf3 1st, I new the best system against it, ended up with a Rook and pawn ending, both had potential past pawns on opposite sides of board, whoever went first on pawn break loses, so draw agreed.
Board 3 Steve Flaherty Quite a dour match for me as Black against Ian Lamb who is something of my nemesis. Draw agreed after just 17 moves sounds like a cop out but in fact we had spent the best part of two and a quarter hours to get to that point. The opening turned out to be the Reti opening (Nf3) and specifically the Kings Indian attack (Barcza System). All this only became apparent after the match and I looked up the opening. But the good news was my instinctive moves proved to be the most popular moves in the various chess data bases so the brain is still working ! Ian put his queen on h4 which seemed a bit odd as his attack was pretty obvious. I forced the queen exchange and any threats he had on my isolated pawn on d5 were quickly negated. Draw agreed and the rest of the team did the necessaries and with no losses we had a good night.
Board 4 Con Carey Game went well, the guy tried to play a Modern Pirc and stop my London System, but it all went wrong and he lost a knight. It was all downhill from then and he was outplayed in the endgame!
Board 5 Tony Jinks My opponent arrived 10 minutes late, which was significant. He opened with an Italian game. I gave him the option of transposing to the Two Knights defence - but unfortunately he did, and 25 moves of tactical mayhem followed. Eventually we exchanged queens into something that was on the borderline between queenless middlegame and endgame. By this point we each had only about 3 minutes left on our clocks. (Now, if he'd turned up on time...) He offered me a draw. I accepted, and he was then soundly berated by his team captain since that secured us the match. (Though Paul's win would have made it academic anyway).
Board 6 Paul Curran I opened e4 and my opponent went into a Caro Kann which I know a little of as Black but haven’t really learned any play for white. However I managed to hold my own in the opening in an advance variation until around move 15 whereupon I allowed my opponent to squeeze me a little on the Kingside unnecessarily. At move 18 I was offered, and declined, a queen trade before making a straightforward blunder allowing my opponent to exchange his dark squared bishop for a rook. By this point though I had quite a significant lead on the clock and my two Knights were advanced enough to harass the Queen side castled black King. Time pressure and the tricky Knights ultimately led to a blunder by my opponent allowing me to fork the King and Rook and gain a win by resignation.

Board 1 Dave Almond I played the Norfolk gambit, Billy Moffat, didn't go for the traps, very complex game , lots of traps which both of us saw through, I had a very powerful knight on f6, which couldn't be dislodged, however neither of us could make any progress, so a draw was agreed.
Board 2 Peter Hurn I played a very tight game starting with the Petrov defence but he would not take my free pawn (so no Stafford this week) and so it ended up a very close game but after I lost a central pawn I found it very hard to form any sort of threats, he traded off and managed to win the end game with a pawn advantage and opposite coloured Bishops.
Board 3 Con Carey Lost his game.
Board 4 Tony Jinks My opponent didn't have much experience of serious play. He started the game by leaving a knight en prise and ended it by leaving his queen en prise. However, in between he played quite well and, despite being a piece up, I had to work hard to make any progress.

Below are our players thoughts on their games.
Board 1 George Turner A wild benko gambit game with lots of complications. Game got very wild after he tried a knight sacrifice. Eventually he blundered a rook away in an even queen + rook Vs queen + rook endgame, when I had a minute left on the clock. I Made a few mistakes, still room for improvement on my part!

Board 2 Bill O'Rourke My opponent Ray tried to force me down his favourite Sicilian line but I played an irregular counter which gave me steady advantage for most of the game. Relexed (tired?) too early at end of middlegame to change a winning game to having to win it again. Ray Rushworth is a steady player and found very good counterplay. BUT then perhaps tried to move too quickly in my time deficit and allowed me to force home a win in a rook and pawns endgame.

Board 3 Dave Almond My game, I found it hard to concentrate, didn't know he was playing out of board order. He as white opened with the Reti, all Major pieces were exchanged, leaving me with an obviously lost end game. I couldn't avoid a loss of a pawn, then blundered another, then curtains.

Board 4 Steve Flaherty White for me meant my English opening again this time against I guy I have known nearly 50 years, Jeremy Peach. He defended really well for three quarters of the game but I felt he was a bit too passive and failed to develop his Kings Bishop and Rook onto the best squares - a bit like my Chorlton opponent the other week. Imaginative use of my knight (it did the equivalent of the Aintree Grand National course) meant I could finally break open his centre. In the end I left him a choice of being mated I one on either H8 or G7. In the end he followed Laskers dictum that his strongest move was to resign!👍😁

Board 5 Peter Hurn I played the Stafford gambit against his 1 e4 and Steve didn't seem to know anything about it so I managed to trap him in just 12 moves, sorry no picture of my game as it ended in just 10 minutes!
Board 6 Paul Curran I recently took a liking to the Italian game, I entered with 3.Bc4. My opponent then led me down the pianissimost of quiet games with most pieces being exchanged off other than a Knight each. I managed to reach an endgame position with 2 pawns vs 1 pawn alongside the knights but missed the only move to secure a win and ended with a draw by insufficient material (and calculation).
